Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans include all Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage, and usually Part D (prescription drug) coverage. Many plans also offer extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs.
Costs vary by plan and location. Many Medicare Advantage plans have $0 premiums (though you still pay your Medicare Part B premium, which is $185/month in 2026). You'll also have copays, coinsurance, and an out-of-pocket maximum. Total costs depend on how much healthcare you use.
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. Coverage starts January 1. You can also enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (when you first become eligible for Medicare) or during Special Enrollment Periods if you qualify.
It depends on your plan type. HMO plans require you to use in-network doctors and get referrals to see specialists. PPO plans let you see out-of-network doctors but you'll pay more. Always check if your doctors are in the plan's network before enrolling.
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with an all-in-one plan from a private company. Medigap supplements Original Medicare by helping pay for copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. You cannot have both Medicare Advantage and Medigap at the same time.
